Stakeholders Validate Priority Interventions to Unlock Domestic Finance for Nigeria’s Carbon Markets

Government representatives, development partners, private sector actors, financial institutions, civil society organizations, and clean cooking stakeholders convened in Abuja for the PRISM Nigeria Initiative Stakeholder Validation Workshop to review and validate priority interventions aimed at unlocking domestic finance for Nigeria’s carbon markets.

The workshop, implemented by the Clean Cooking Alliance (CCA), NoMAP, and GOGLA, provided a platform for stakeholders to validate research findings, review recommendations emerging from bilateral consultations, and build consensus on regulatory and financing interventions that will strengthen Nigeria’s carbon market ecosystem and accelerate investments in clean cooking solutions.

Delivering the keynote address, Ibrahim Shelleng, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Climate Finance and Stakeholder Engagement, reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for climate finance and carbon market development. He emphasized the importance of coordinated action among public institutions, development partners, and the private sector to position Nigeria as a competitive participant in the global carbon economy.

The workshop featured presentations on the findings of the PRISM Nigeria Initiative, including insights from stakeholder consultations conducted across the clean cooking and carbon market landscape. Participants reviewed existing financing barriers, institutional challenges, and regulatory gaps while identifying practical opportunities to stimulate domestic investment and improve market confidence.

As part of the programme, Mr. Ewah Otu Eleri represented by Climate Advisor, Chinonso Agbo presented findings on behalf of the Nigerian Alliance for Clean Cookstoves (NACC), highlighting the critical role of clean cooking in Nigeria’s climate and development agenda. The presentation underscored the need for innovative financing mechanisms, stronger policy coordination, and expanded private sector participation to accelerate the adoption of clean cooking technologies nationwide.

A major highlight of the workshop was the interactive working group session, where participants collectively reviewed and prioritized regulatory interventions required to strengthen Nigeria’s carbon market framework. Through collaborative discussions, stakeholders identified areas requiring immediate policy attention, institutional support, and coordinated implementation to unlock sustainable financing opportunities.

The workshop concluded with presentations from each working group, during which participants shared areas of consensus, key recommendations, and proposed actions to guide the next phase of implementation. The validated priorities will inform the development of an implementation roadmap under the PRISM Nigeria Initiative and support ongoing efforts to strengthen domestic carbon markets while expanding access to clean cooking solutions across Nigeria.

The outcomes of the workshop represent an important milestone in advancing practical, stakeholder-driven solutions that will mobilize domestic finance, strengthen Nigeria’s carbon market ecosystem, and contribute to the country’s climate commitments, sustainable development objectives, and energy transition goals.
