The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has approved the Nigerian Industrial Standard for biomass type clean cookstoves developed by the National Mirror Committee on Clean Cooking Solutions and Fuel Standards under the leadership of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria. The National Mirror Committee on Clean Cooking Solutions and Fuel Standards was constituted by the Nigerian Alliance for Clean Cookstoves. The development of the Standards was necessitated by the increase of different types of biomass clean cookstove with quality and safety issues in the Nigerian markets. Lack of standards and regulations for clean cookstoves hinders stove manufacturers’ efforts to differentiate their stoves and most stove manufacturers had to carry out individual field tests, which leave room for biased quality certifications. The drive towards the standardization of cookstoves in Nigeria has been ongoing since 2013. The Standards, prior to approval went through several reviews under the leadership of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria. The Standards Organisation of Nigeria had also convened Technical Committee meetings to look at the parameters in the standard for functionality of the cookstove and safety of the users. The approved standards entail the requirements for design, construction and safety considerations of the biomass cookstove and will ensure that only quality cookstoves are found in the Nigerian Market. Gas to Health Initiative (GTHI) empowers local food vendors popularly known as “Mama Puts” with LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) cookstoves on July 14, 2018 at the National Centre for Women Development, Abuja during her 4th annual program with the theme “Better life for Mama puts/Local Food Vendors”. The aim of the program was to sensitize and empower Mama puts mostly women and girls in Abuja from the use of unhealthy cooking fuels to LPG Cookstoves, the most efficient cooking energy in Nigeria. The event which was hosted by Mrs. Betty Ugona Executive Secretary GTHI had in attendance over 200 participants. The participants includes over 150 local food vendors, Mr. Awalu Ilu Managing Director/CEO Ultimate Gas, Engr. Henry Obih COO Downstream NNPC, Hon Obinna Chidoka, House committee on Habitat and Environment, as well as representatives of NNPC retail, Banner Gas, NAFDAC, Techno Oil, NACC among other agencies and organisations. Mrs. Willy Willy of Wazobia FM Radio anchored the event. Mrs. Betty Ugona speaking on behalf of the GTHI noted that “Operation Mama Put/Local Food Vendors conversion to LPG usage” was launched four years ago. The SFM project held a 3-day Business Forum for woodlot developers, fuelwood dealers, efficient woodstoves producers/sellers and Micro Finance Institutions (MFIs) from June 19-21, 2018 at Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Calabar, Cross River State. The forum created an opportunity for fuelwood value chain actors to interact among themselves, exchange experiences, develops skills, and share knowledge and ideas on innovative business and financing models. Over 70% of Nigeria’s estimated 180 million inhabitants still rely on fuel-wood in meeting their energy needs for cooking and heating. The unsustainable and constant use of fuel-wood by Nigerian households and institutions is one of the causes of deforestation and land degradation in Nigeria. The Global Environment Facility (GEF) through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Energy Commission of Nigeria, the Federal Ministry of Environment and other stakeholders are supporting the implementation of a 5-Year project: “Sustainable Fuel Wood Management (SFM) in Nigeria”, which commenced in June 2017. The SFM project encourages effective forest management for sustainable fuelwood production and consumption for multiple environmental benefits in Cross River, Delta and Kaduna states for the next 5 years. The Business forum focused on the establishment of smallholder farmers-managed woodlot; establishment of sustainable fuelwood markets; promotion of energy-efficient woodstoves through market based approaches with community-based micro-credits to incentivize woodlot owners and end-users of cookstoves. The company is a Public Private Partnership (PPP) project with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD) through the National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA). It is one of the five Rice Mills established by the Federal Government in 2009/2012 through the Special Rice Intervention Scheme approved in 2008 aimed at developing high quality milling capacity. The company’s installed capacity is 42,000 tons of Paddy/year. The Nigerian Alliance for Clean Cookstoves (NACC) will be launching a new music video on Tuesday, June 5, 2018 at Nordic Hotel, Mabushi, Abuja. The Music Video is in support of clean cooking solutions especially for the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the North East Nigeria. It highlights the health hazards and sufferings of millions of people (especially women) cooking with open fire using firewood. About 95% of IDPs, host communities and returnees in the Northeast depends on firewood and charcoal for cooking and 85% of these households face protection risks when collecting firewood. Key UN agencies and organisations like FAO, World Food Programme, UNHCR, ICEED and other Safe Access to Fuels and Energy(SAFE) Nigeria partners are facilitating a coordinated and effective response to the fuel and energy needs of crisis-affected communities in Northeast Nigeria. The International Centre for Energy, Environment and Development (ICEED) with funding from the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has established three (3) fuel-efficient cookstoves production/training centres in 3 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Borno State. The centres are in Jere, Konduga and Maiduguri LGAs and have provided training to 100 people on technical and business aspects of fuel-efficient coookstoves production across the three L.G.As. During the launch of the Centre in Gongulong community in Jere LGA on April 16, 2018, Mr. Macki Tall, FAO’s Deputy Country Representative noted that the measure was part of a comprehensive programme initiated by the organisation to reduce dependence on firewood, encourage development of alternative energies and provide sustainable livelihood to communities. According to Mr. Tall, people engaged in firewood collection were prone to attacks and abduction by Boko Haram insurgents, while women and children were exposed to eye and respiratory infections through inhalation of harmful firewood smoke. The project foresees to distribute at least 5,000 locally produced fuel-efficient stoves in the three LGAs to households with very limited access to firewood. This will help them to reduce the amount of firewood needed to meet their daily cooking need. The Borno State Commissioner for Environment, Alhaji Kaka Shehu represented by Mala Barma, the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, stated that the forest in the state has been subjected to large scale degradation due to the strangulation of businesses and economic activities as a result of the activities of the insurgents over the past years.
