NEWMAP Commences Stove Distribution in 7 States

The Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP) have commenced the dissemination of households and institutional clean cookstoves in its seven (7) pilot states. This is part of the multifaceted efforts by NEWMAP to manage the gully erosion and watershed challenges in Nigeria as well as reduce the rate of deforestation in the pilot states. The seven (7) pilot states are southern states with acute gully erosion – Abia, Anambra, Cross River, Ebonyi, Edo, Enugu and Imo States. The project will stimulate demand and create the market for clean cookstoves in Nigeria with an initial focus on these pilot states.
The flag-off of the stove dissemination was a one-day ceremony which took place in Enugu State at Ugwunto community, Udi Local Government Area. It was attended by traditional rulers, members of the community, staff and state coordinator of NEWMAP. Ebonyi, Cross-River and Edo states have also flagged off their dissemination within the project communities.

The project will compliment the National Clean Cookstove Market Development Programme (NCCMDP) which is an initiative of the Federal Government of Nigeria through the Federal Ministry of Environment. It is being developed with assistance from the Nigerian Infrastructure Advisory Facility (NIAF) in collaboration with the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves and the Nigerian Alliance for Clean Cookstoves.
