Our organisation seeks to achieve greater partnership in Nigeria’s cooking energy market as well as ensuring lower operating costs, better processes and proven technology, methodology and approach. We deliver a strategy to meet short-term and long-term goals and building a World-Class organization and sector. Can you tell us about your clean cookstoves and clean cooking activities including your achievements? Our organization chairs the resource mobilization committee of the Nigerian Alliance for Clean Cookstoves. We provide an advisory role in strategy development and advocacy. We also participate in concept development. What are your biggest challenges in carrying out your activities in the sector? Our biggest challenge working in the clean cooking sector is the weak state of the sector and the inability to utilize optimally offered advice. Give us a brief introduction about your organisation Khattar Resources is an indigenous company whose primary focus is on consolidated iron works fabrication. Our vision is to bring innovation and to add value on essential commodities and service delivery. The company has over the years designed and produced different ranges of gas burners branded as MAGMA burners and are powered with cooking gas. What does your organization seek to archive in the Nigeria cooking energy market? Our organization seeks to make MAGMA burner’s products available in the market at affordable prices. We encourage local women and stakeholders in the cooking industry to upgrade to gas through advocacy and awareness drive. We also work on expanding the scope of our network and outlets within the major markets nationwide. Can you tell us about your clean cooking activities including your achievements? We design and produce nine (9) different types of gas burner according to market demands and feedback from consumers. We have upgraded our workshop to meet the standards and to scale up daily productions. Give us a brief introduction about your organisation Tara Agro Industries Limited is an integrated rice processing mill focused on processing paddy stock to finished/polished rice and packaging same as high quality branded rice. The company is a Public Private Partnership (PPP) project with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD) through the National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA). It is one of the five Rice Mills established by the Federal Government in 2009/2012 through the Special Rice Intervention Scheme approved in 2008 aimed at developing high quality milling capacity. The company’s installed capacity is 42,000 tons of Paddy/year. What does your organisation seek to achieve in the Nigeria’s cooking energy market In processing paddy, rice mills generate considerable volumes of rice husk used partly for energy generation for boilers, dryers etc. The residual rice husk is used to produce briquettes which are a viable source of low cost energy for cooking etc. Our Organisation is seeking to promote the use of these rice husk briquettes for cooking in homes at affordable cost. Until now, the rice husk constituted a major environmental hazard and ecosystem challenge. National Centre for Energy Efficiency and Conservation (NCEEC) is the Partner of the Month of April! In this interview, the head of the technical unit, Charles Eguma shares their activities in the clean cookstoves sector. Give us a brief introduction about your organisation National Centre for Energy Efficiency and Conservation (NCEEC), is one the six energy research centres established by the Energy Commission Nigeria (ECN). The Centre’s core activity is research and development. This includes: energy audit and energy management, energy research & training, energy efficiency and conservation awareness, product verification, development of standards and codes for energy efficient appliances, renewable energy design and project development, and policy advisory. What does your organization seek to achieve in the Nigeria’s cooking energy market? In Nigeria, cooking is mainly done using the traditional 3-stone stove and other similar inefficient means leading to severe waste of energy and attendant health problems owing to excessive smoke. To reduce the waste and minimize the associated problems, researchers are developing many types of efficient wood-burning and charcoal stoves to replace the inefficient ones. To this end, NCEEC embarked on a project to develop a prototype of the Save-80 clean cook stove in partnership with Atmosfair Gmbh. NCEEC seeks to promote the adoption of clean cook stoves for households in Nigeria. In the medium-long term, NCEEC will carry out the fabrication of adapter rings and pots for the stove, this is geared towards improving the design of the circular steel adapter to enable different pot sizes fit into the stove.
